Effects of Herba Houttuyniae on the Antibacterial Activity of Ampicillin and Erythromycin Lactobionate
Abstract:Objective To survey the effects of herba houttuyniae on the in vivo antibacterial activity of ampicillin and erythromycin lactobionate in rabbits.Methods25 healthy rabbits were randomly divided into 5 equal groups, with 5 animals in each. The rabbits of group 1,2,3,4 and 5 were intrevenously given herba houttuyniae (1 ml·kg-1), ampicillin (0.15 g·kg-1),herba houttuyniae (1 ml·kg-1) and ampicillin (0.15 g·kg-1),erythromycin lactobionate(0.05 g·kg-1),herba houttuyniae (1 ml·kg-1) and erythromycin lactobionate(0.05 g·kg-1),respectively,once daily for 6 consecutive days.5ml of blood was then taken from the heart of each rabbit and the antibacterial activities of the sera were measured by microbiological methods. ResultsHerba houttuyniae itself was shown to have little antibacterial activity in vitro and in vivo, but it did very significantly enhance the in vitro antibacterial activity of ampicillin (P<0.01). However herba houttuyniae had no obvious influenc on the antibacterial activity of erythromycin lactobionate (P>0.05).ConclusionHerba houttuyniae in combination with ampicillin , but not with erythromycin lactobionate ,shows to have a synergistic antibacterial activity.
